There are three levels of fylgja that the Fylgjar [of the family of Nornir] brind to a person.

Mannsfylgja - the strengths and talents earned in prior lives or a prior life tend to be replayed such as Beethoven's composing when he was younger than 6 years old. Also mannsfylgja is the unfinished business, not a punishment, but the challenges left over from prior incarnations, whether this is developing courage, or Will, or the ability to overcome accumulation, or the need to find a work ethic- it, or a combination of many challenges- will be different for each person.

Kynnsfylgja - the tendencies that run in family groups- reminiscent of Rupert Sheldrake's 'metagenetic' theories and observations. As a particular clan or kinship group (kynn in Old Norse is origin of kin in English) developed proficiencies in a particular area, this strength became more available to successive generations of persons in that family line, whether the practiced discipline was that of a farrior or stock broker. BUT, also the challenges of that line equally were presented, whether it was refraining from criminality, predation, or parasitism and you might think of someone coming from several generations of welfare or gang membership here- that person, even beyond the environmental factors, has a spiritual struggle to overcome the tendency to just auto-repeat the cycles of behavior, the toxic lifestyles.

Oettarsfylgja - the tendencies, both strengths and challenges, that are manifest in the larger families to which we all belong- our races. It is not politically correct to note that overseas Chinese are very good at business, or Germans at the sciences, or people of Levantine origin at banking, but these would be examples of some capability-clusters: perhaps some will eventually be identified as explanatory allele groupings, that lead to above-average competencies in a particular area of work. Likewise, though, in the larger sense, when enough of a particular type of person are assembled, they tend to create a particular type of society.

It might be noteworthy that abolishing child work and the political and social rights of women, public education for all, setting aside of public lands to protect species and resources rather than merely a royal hunting preserve- these endeavors took shape only though such men as Otto Bismark and Theodore Roosevelt and Susan Anthony- moreover such efforts as they made would only be possible and were only possible in societies dominated by North and Central Europeans. These are examples of oettarsfylgja, and a comparison of the living conditions on Madagascar and New Zealand would tell a similar story- such island nations evolved differently more by the nature of their occupants than their climate and resources.

The world shows us many examples of nations with abundant natural resources and long growing seasons that remain forever backward, like Haiti, and others that should, due to scarce resources and a very hostile climate by all rights be extremely poor, but have a very high standard of living and level of technology, such as Iceland- the difference is in the people. That is oettarsfylgja.
